Of the many popular action movies in Bollywood, mention may be made of Parinda. The movie was directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Parinda is considered by millions of film critics to be the turning point in Indian cinema.

Parinda has a wonderful theme. It discusses the real life of Indian underworld gangsters and the general life of residents in the city of Bombay. The film was written by Shivkumar Subramaniam. It was released in the year 1989 and became a super hit movie. The film featured some serious and critic-acclaimed acting by the four main stars. They were Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, and Madhuri Dixit.

It tells the story of henchman Kishen played by Jackie Shroff. Kishen is an orphan and had seen hard days but he does not wish his brother to face the same. He worked for a psychotic don, Anna (Nana Patekar).

Kishen tries hard to keep his younger brother Karan played by Anil Kapoor away from the world of crime by sending him abroad. Karan is best friends with a cop Prakash played by Anupam Kher and is in love with his sister Paro, Madhuri Dixit. But problem starts when Karan returns back to Bombay. He immediately goes to meet Prakash who gets killed in front of his eyes. He is shocked to find his brother involvements with Anna's gang who kills Prakash.

In order to take revenge Karan joins Anna's gang against the wishes of his elder brother. As soon as he joins the gang he starts tipping off a rival gang. This is does in order to take revenge for his dearest friend, Prakash's murder. In a desperate attempt to get Karan away from it all, Kishen gets him married to Paro. He then convinces him to get away from it all. But the story reaches its climax when Karan and Paro are brutally killed on their wedding night. Kishen finally takes revenge for Karan's death by turning against Anna and setting him ablaze.

Parinda won many awards. It took most of the prestigious awards in Filmfare. Some of them are Filmfare Best Director Award, Filmfare Best Actor Award for Jackie Shroff, Best Editing Award for Renu Saluja, Best Screenplay Award for Shivkumar Subramaniam and Best Supporting Actor Award for Nana Patekar. Moreover the film was India's official entry for the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
