This popular movie was released in 1998 and directed by Vikram Bhatt. The movie had a good box office business. Ghulam has been adapted from the 1954 classic 'On the Waterfront' which starred Marlon Brando.

The main character of Ghulam is Sidharth played by the renowned actor Aamir Khan. Here he is an amateur boxer who doesn't work and spends his time with friends. The older brother of Sidharth is Jai which is played by Rajit Kapoor. He works for a gangster who terrorizes the merchants, demands protection money and controls the neighborhood.

When Sidharth was a child he idolized his father who was an ex-freedom fighter. He saw his father committing a suicide out of guilt after an old acquaintance visited him. Later in the movie Ghulam, Sidharth meets a girl named Alisha played by Rani Mukerji. She rides with a motorcycle gang. He also meets Hari who is a social worker. The movie tells the audience about the romance of Sidharth with Alisha.

In 1996 Aamir's first and only release was the hit movie Raja Hindustani. He won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for this movie. It was the third highest grossing Indian movie in the 1990's. His first home production release was Lagaan in 2001 and it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The movie Ghulam was written by Anjum Rajabali. Aamir Khan is one of the famous Bollywood stars in India. In the movie his acting was superb and he successfully portrayed the role of an aspiring boxer. Meanwhile Rani Mukherji was a sophisticated girl who falls into this boy's charm. What appealed to the audience about Ghulam is not only the storyline but also the songs which were quite a hit like "Aati kya Khandala" and Jadoo hai tera hi jadoo".
