Ghatak was released in 1996. This multi-starrer flick won applauds from the entire film industry. Danny Denzongpa, put up an unforgettable performance in Ghatak. Other actors, who made valuable contributions to Ghatak, are Sunny Deol, Minakshi Sheshadri, Amrish Puri and Om Puri. The brilliant screen play of Ghatak was written by Late P.D. Burman. Unfortunately, an ailing Burman died only a few months before the release of the movie.

Rajkumar Santoshi, the director of Ghatak, chose a perfect locale for the shooting of the movie. Indoor shootings were done within the studio, but outdoor scenes were shot amidst nature. The set of the hamlet was created on the hill slopes. Studded with tranquil natural beauty and an arid flavor of rural India, Ghatak is also known for its sweet numbers.

Plot of Ghatak

Ghatak depicts the plight of a tiny town controlled by a cruel ruler. Katya the ruler with an iron fist creates havoc in the town. Nobody in the town lead a life with free will. Tension brews up but most remain quite. In the mean time, Om Puri a resident of the town organizes a protest against Katya. However, Om Puri is brutally murdered by Katya.

This frightens the dwellers all the more.

Meanwhile Sunny Deol arrives with his father in the town. Sunny has an ailing father who must be treated in the town. But, sunny is left bewildered, after he witnesses the plight of the town. He vows to release the residents of the town from the clutches of Katya. Sunny Deol as Kashi shows his might to Katya and teaches him a strong lesson.

In the garb of a social tale, Ghatak talks about the spirit of village democracy. The problem depicted in Ghatak is one of the most common problems in most of the villages and hamlets of India. Ghatak also points out, that real power lies in the hands of the people alone. The indifferent attitude of the government officials is also questioned in this movie.

Music director Anu Malik added some entertaining music with groovy numbers. Ghatak is still popular for its fast beats and dance sequences. Costume designing of Ghatak was also acclaimed. The cinematographer of Ghatak, captured some interesting moments on the camera. Ghatak also portrays brilliant editing skills on the part of the editor.
