Deewar is more an Indian classic movie than a Bollywood action movie. Though it is considered, as one of the best Bollywood action movies of all times, its popularity as well the impact on the audiences and its importance in the history of Bollywood movies have characterized it to be an Indian Hindi classic movie. It was a super hit blockbuster movie at the box office in the year of its release in 1975.
Deewar, released on 24th January in the year of 1975, starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi and Neetu Singh, Nirupa Roy and Satyen Kappu. This film followed Zanjeer that again is marked by the excellent performance of Amitabh Bachchan. The most interesting thing about this film is that it has been included in the list of the 'top twenty five must see Bollywood movies'.
The plot of Deewar contains so many aspects in such an organized manner that they do not seem to be forcefully projected. The story of Deewar is very simple. Vijay and Ravi (played by Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor) are two sons of a trade unionist. Vijay, the elder son sacrifices a lot for his brother. He does not go to school in order that his brother gets the scope to study and become a police officer some day. He spends days as a shoeshine boy and earns for the family.
Irony plays an important role in Deewar. It is also quite ironical that Ravi becomes a police officer. More ironically, Vijay goes through many circumstances that ultimately turn him to be a don of the underworld. Ravi is instructed to arrest Vijay. One of the sub-plots in Deewar deals with the affair between Vijay and Anita, a bar dancer (played by Parveen Babi). Another sub-plot reveals the affair between Ravi and Veera whose role was played by Neetu Singh. Their mother ultimately takes the side of her younger son, though it cost her lot of pain. Vijay ultimately dies while running away from the police. Ravi is rewarded for the bravery that he shows while chasing Vijay, the underworld don.
One of the social taboos that have been present in this film is premarital sex. It has been presented through the premarital sex between Vijay and Anita. The performance of leading actors and actresses is superb. Nirupa Roy as the mother of Vijay has done a remarkable performance in the film Deewar.
