Company is a Bollywood action movie released in 2002, which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film Company is a near acute depiction of the violence and the politics of power intrinsic to the Mumbai underworld. The film stars Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Manisha Koirala and Mohanlal. The film is closely based on the Indian mafia organization, the D-Company which is run by Dawood Ibrahim. Post- Satya, Company is known as the best action movie directed by the veteran director, Ram Gopal Verma.
Revealing the tactics of a mafia organization, Company is a great action movie in Bollywood. Most will feel that Company is totally realistic. But Ram Gopal Verma tries to distance the film from the real life operations of a gang war. Yet it is in its stylistic depiction that the action becomes more thrilling. The play revolves around the dynamic life of a young man named Chandu acted by Vivek Oberoi. He joins the Mumbai underworld to realize his aspirations of being rich and famous. Using his intelligence and reckless courage, he is able to increase the profits of his gang. Soon he earns the preference of the leader of the mafia, Malik played by Ajay Devgan.
Differences crop up over the execution of a contract killing. There is a local politician who wishes to eliminate his close rival for the post of Home Minister. From here it is a bizarre tale of a threatening gang war that escalates to bring the whole city of Mumbai under its throes. Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner Sreenivasan played by Mohanlal, tries to utilize the tensions and break up the gang. He slowly brings it under it under its power. In all Company is a statement of the politics for gaining limitless power, whether within the administration, underworld or the executive. The last chase sequence that is shot in Kenya is brilliantly done where Malik hires men to kill Chandu. However after a lot of complexities we see Malik murdered by Chandu's closest aide at gun point. Chandu surrenders to the police and the film ends on a stark note of irony.
Company also brings into play a deep humane side that its characters effuse in their acting. The intensely captivating moments of Chandu with his wife and Malik and his girlfriend are well drawn out. Company is a truly stirring action movie that ignites the imagination with its focus on the ground realities of the underworld while equally distancing itself from that world. The film brings the ultimate futility of heedless striving for power.
