Boxer, directed by Raj N. Sippy and released on 17th February in the year of 1984, is an unforgettable name in the world of the Bollywood action movies. This film starring Mithun Chakraborty, Tanuja, Sharat Saxena and Rati Agnihotri, came to be vary popular at the time when it was released. Mithun Chakraborty once again proved his mettle as a talented actor.

There have been various kinds of reactions to the story of Boxer. A section of audience is of the opinion that the conflict between the aspiration and the expectation of the father, and the anxiety and apprehension of the girlfriend has been projected well in the film. The others opine that though the conflict has been depicted well, no solution has been indicated. For better understanding of the two opinions, let us discuss the plot of Boxer very briefly.

In Boxer, Dharma, a boxer in the Kashmir Silk Mill, leads a happy life with his wife. He comes across a proposal that if he could win the boxing fight against Shera, he would be sent to London. Unfortunately, he loses the fight and gets severely injured. Out of frustration, he starts taking alcohol, and becomes indifferent to his wife Savitri and son Shankar. In course of time, Savitri gives birth to her second child. The family badly suffers from poverty.

To help the family get rid of poverty, Shankar takes to stealing. One day he gets caught in his bid to steal a watch. After his trial, he is sentenced to six months imprisonment. In the jail he gets involved into a fight with one of his inmates. The way he fought impresses the boxing manager who did a lot to train Shankar as a boxer after he is released from jail. Eventually, Shankar gets involved in confrontation with the reigning boxing champion. He fights well but loses to the champion after being injured. Hid girlfriend, Rajni makes him swear that he would not take up boxing again.

On the other hand, the wounded boxer self of Shankar's father wants healing by the success of Shankar as a boxer. Failing to persuade Shankar, he takes to drinking again. The issue of Shankar getting back into the boxing ring or not is left unanswered.

The screenplay writer of Boxer was Jyoti Swaroop and the dialogue writer of Boxer was Vinay Shukla. The fighting scenes are not the projection of meaningless exaggeration. Rather, they are quite practical and realistic. The performance of the supporting actors including Tanuja and Rati Agnihotra, is to be appreciated. Mithun Chakraborty did really improve much as an actor in this film. After this film, he evolved as a Bollywood's raging bull.
