Bazzi originated as per a commitment given by Dev Anand to Guru Dutt in his days of struggle. Bazzi was an instant hit in the box-office and both Dev Anand and Guru Dutt gained a lot from the film. Guru Dutt created a niche for himself and thus became a popular figure in Bollywood. Bazzi is a popular action movie released in the year 1951.

The movie was directed by Guru Dutt and was produced by Dev Anand`s production house namely Navketan. The music was given by S.D Burman. The songs became very popular and are even played today. The film is a tribute to the Forties` Film Noir Hollywood with the morally ambiguous hero, the transgressing siren, and shadow lighting.

Bazzi is a crime thriller and deals with the story of a young boy who chooses the path of crime in order to save his loved one. The direction was very nice and it laid emphasis on every minute details. The cinematography was also impressive. The fighting scenes looked matured and dialogues were perfect for such a film.



Bazzi had a good cast crew. The film starred Dev Anand, the super star at that time. He was also a friend of the director Guru Dutt. Other actors included were Geeta Bali and Kalpana Kartik. Geeta Bali did some hit Hindi films like Bawre Nain, Baaz and Jaal. Kalpana Kartik`s first film was Bazzi and did four more films. She later on married Dev Anand. Guru Dutt introduced Zohra Sehgal as the choreographer in the movie.

The movie tells the story of an honest, courageous young boy Madan played by Dev Anand. It was when Madan could not buy medicine for his dear one due to lack of money he gave himself into gambling. Rajni a doctor offered him help but it was against his nature to accept charity. Then we see another girl Nina who was slightly different in attitude. Though discarded by the society yet she was good. It was she who stirred Madan to risk his life in order to save the life of his dear one.

But little did Madan know that he was walking into a trap. A trap that would endanger not only his own life, but also Rajni`s, Nina`s and Rupa`s. We see a kind inspector Ramesh who succeeds in saving some lives but was too late to save a precious life. Watch the movie to enjoy the thrill and to know who it is.

Bazzi is also famous in Indian cinema because of two technical developments. These are attributed to Guru Dutt. One is the use of close-up shots with a 100 mm lens. In this movie you will find more than 14 such shots. This came to be known in Indian movie-making as the "Guru Dutt shot". The other development is the use of songs to further the narrative in the movie.
