This is one of the Bollywood action movies which has an unusual pairing of the petite Rani Mukherjee and the handsome Bobby Deol. Directed by Raj Kanwar, Badal is loosely based on the famous Hollywood movie of The Devil's Own. The movie begins with the 1984 riots when the police searches for the terrorists frantically.

Mantavir aka Aashish Vidhyarthi seeks refuge in Alok Nath's home and is treated like a family member. As the police force led by Jai Singh Rana swarms the village, Mantavir is forced to escape. Ashutosh Rana or Jai Singh Rana instructs his force to kill all the innocent villagers and Badal's family gets killed in the course of events. Mantavir saves Badal and trains him accordingly who vows to avenge the death of his parents. Later he is involved in the looting of a bank and Badal escapes to Sunder Nagar with the money. His focus remains Jai Singh, who is a corrupt policeman and is involved in a lot of crimes and drug deals.



When Badal aka Bobby Deol comes to town he starts staying in Amrish Puri's home. Amrish Puri or Ranjit Singh is an honest officer whose family does not approve of Badal at first sight. Especially his wife is skeptical about the young man and is extremely protective about his daughters. However Mayuri Kongo, Amrish Puri's elder daughter is helped by Badal and the two sisters start calling him his brother. The film takes a positive turn from this moment as the audience gets acquainted with the humane side of Badal who till now is shown as a ruthless terrorist.

It is during this time that Badal encounters Rani Mukherjee and falls in love with this beautiful girl. His search for Jai Singh continues and after several twists and turns among which Ranjit Singh also comes to know about the true identity of Badal, the protagonist of the movie finally kills the corrupt policeman. This potboiler is produced by Samad Akhtar and Salim Akhtar. There is freshness in the lead pair and the story has some definite turns where the terrorist is given a new leash of life as he gets to understand the true values of relationship. Badal is considered as one of the most popular action flicks in Bollywood and is considered as one of the biggest hits of 2000.
