Born in a district of Uttar Pradesh, Vishal Bhardwaj is presently counted among India's top most music composers. Along with that, he also takes pride in being a renowned writer and film director as well.

Early stages of Vishal Bhardwaj's career

He moved to Delhi as he became independent. Soon, Vishal Bhardwaj started playing harmonium for unpopular ghazal singers. Playing in the food festivals which were housed in the Pragati Maidan of Delhi served him immensely. R. V. Pandit was the first well known celebrity to whom he was introduced. It was the CBS music company from where Vishal Bhardwaj started his musical career.

Further progress of Vishal Bhardwaj's career

His work was appreciated and with the recommendation of a friend, Vishal Bhardwaj got the opportunity to collaborate with filmmaker Gulzar, on television serials. Some of the famous TV serials of those days are Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book and Guchche. He was approached by Gulzar for composing the music for the movie, 'Maachis'. The movie was not a box office hit; however, the music of Maachis was highly acclaimed.



In addition, it was the music of this movie that earned him the Filmfare R D Burman Award in the year 1996. This was the major turning point of his career and since the release of Maachis there has been no looking back for Vishal Bhardwaj. Within a short span of time Vishal Bhardwaj started composing music for movies like Chachi 420 and Satya.

Later he gave music in movies like Hu Tu Tu, No Smoking, Chupke Se, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, U, Me Aur Hum, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, Kagaar: Life on the Edge and many more. Along with his musical career, he has also made name as a director, producer as well as a writer.

After attaining a remarkable position in the musical arena, Vishal Bhardwaj tried his hands in direction. His directorial debut Makdee, a children's movie, was appreciated by one and all, across the country as well as some international countries. With his later movies, namely Maqbool, The Blue Umbrella and Omkara, he showed his caliber in film-making.

He is presently working on Blood Brothers, an 11-minute HIV-AIDS awareness movie. After its completion he would be starting off the direction of Julia.

Awards won by Vishal Bhardwaj

He bagged the prestigious award 'National Film Award for Best Music Direction' in 1999 for the movie Godmother. In 2002 he received the Adult Jury Award in Chicago International Children's Film Festival. Year 2006 turned out to be remarkable with Vishal achieving four popular awards for the movie Omkara.
