Shankar Jaikishan - Introduction - Shankar Jaikishan is a famous duo of Bollywood music composers. Shankar, originally from Punjab received his lessons in music under the guidance of his mentor Husnlal Bhagatram. Afterwards Shankar moved to Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. Jaikishan of the renowned duo Shankar Jaikishan belonged to Panchal in Gujarat. It is a striking fact that Jaikishan worked as a carpenter prior to his union with Shankar.

Career of Shankar Jaikishan - Shankar Jaikishan started their career as assistants to Husnlal Bhagatram. In 1948 they got their first break as music directors in the film Barsaat by Raj Kapoor. After that they composed music together for over 250 movies. They were the most popular and eminent duo of music composers in Bollywood. The Indian film industry honored their love for music with nine Filmfare Awards, the maximum number of awards that has been received by any music director in India.

Shankar Jaikishan worked separately while creating their music. After the first few years of their union, Shailendra tuned the songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri whereas Shanker composed music for the songs written by Shailendra. However, there were some exceptions like the songs `Kaise samjhaoon` and `Taron se pyare` written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Shanker. The songs Mera naam Raju` and `O basanti pawan pagal` written by Shailendra and composed by Jaikishan.

Contribution of Shankar Jaikishan to Indian music - Shankar Jaikishan contributed a lot to the world of music in India right from the day they began working as music directors. Music composed by them was extensive. It was based on classical Indian music (`Dil ek mandir hai`, `O basanti pawan pagal`) and even on western music (`Sukoo sukoo`, `Raat ke hamsafar`). Their music was characterized by a special style.

Shankar Jaikishan flourished as music composers in Bollywood after they composed music for the film by Raj Kapoor - `Barsaat` in 1948. This film also was the beginning of their work with Raj Kapoor. Hit music by Shankar Jaikishan in films such as `Awara,` `Aah` and `Aag` were the best in Bollywood in the 1950s. Music in the films Sangam and Shree 420 by Shankar Jaikishan are perhaps the most remarkable. They parted with the death of Jaikishan.

Awards received by Shankar Jaikishan - Shankar Jaikishan won 9 Filmfare Awards for the 1956, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1966, 1970, 1971 and 1972. The films for which they received these awards are `Chori Chori`, `Anari`, `Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai`, `Professor`, `Suraj`, `Pehchaan`, `Mera Naam Joker` and `Be-Imaan`.
