Gulzar - Introduction - Gulzar or Sampooran Singh Gulzar, born on the 18th of August, 1936, is renowned worldwide as a leading poet, director, producer, playwright and lyricist of India. His works are mostly involved with Urdu and Hindi languages. Gulzar was born in Jhelum District's Dina, which is now situated in present day Pakistan in the old province of West Punjab.

Gulzar is known primarily for his connection as a lyricist with Rahul Dev Burman, a famous Indian music director. Gulzar has also written songs for other popular music composers of Hindi films like Madan Mohan, Sachin Dev Burman and Salil Chowdhury.

Gulzar's Career in Bollywood - Gulzar started his work in Bollywood as assistant to Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Hemant Kumar and Bimal Roy and learned more about working in the film industry. In 1963 the lyrics, which he wrote first, were for the song 'Mora Gora Ang Lai Lae' in the film 'Bandini' by Bimal Roy. Other directors for whom Gulzar started writing films, comprise Asit Sen and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The films, which were written by Gulzar, include 'Guddi', 'Khamoshi', 'Namak Haram', 'Safar', 'Do Dooni Char' and 'Anand'.



Filmmaking of Gulzar - The first Hindi film in Bollywood that was made by Gulzar was 'Mere Apne' (1971). He then made 'Koshish' and 'Parichay' in 1972. Gulzar started working jointly with Sanjeev Kumar and presented many successful films to the Hindi film industry like 'Mausam' and 'Aandhi'.

The most memorable films that Gulzar made during the 1980s as well as 1990s comprise 'Maachis', 'Ijazaat' and 'Lekin'. But his film 'Hu Tu Tu', which was made in1999, was a complete flop at the box office. Gulzar also made a very popular serial for Indian television known as 'Mirza Galib' after a famous Indian poet. Other well-liked TV serials for which he worked are 'Potli Baba Ki' and 'Jungle Book'. The films for which Gulzar wrote screenplays, lyrics and dialogues, include 'Rudali', 'Masoom', 'Ghulami', 'Sadma', 'Maya Memsaab', 'Basera', 'Thodi Si Bewafai', 'Satya' and 'Dil Se'.

Awards received by Gulzar - Gulzar was honored with the Filmfare Award for innumerable times. Some of these include the 1976 Filmfare Award for Best Director ('Mausam') and the 1983 Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist for the song 'Tujhse naraaz nahi zindagi' ('Ijazaat'). He also won the National Award for Best Lyricist for the song 'Mera Kuchh Saaman' ('Ijazaat').
