Of many Bollywood movies on Cricket mention may be made of Stumped. This film is Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon's production. Want to enjoy watching a simple entertainment flick with some emotions embedded in it then go for Stumped.
The film is set during the 1999 cricket world cup. The Kargil war is the subplot. But due to lack of proper inter-weaving of the sub plot with the main plot the film has not done well in the box-office.
The film "Stumped" revolves around an army officer major Raghav Seth played by Aly Khan and his loving beautiful wife, Raveena Tandon. While his neighbors are excited about the World Cup Cricket, Raghav, is fighting the Kargil War for his country. His wife Reena is tensed and is waiting for the return of her husband. Thus the movie entertains you as well as makes you curious about what is to happen next.
Both Raghav and Reena stay in a colony namely Happy Home Complex. The residents of this colony have high faith on the Indian team and are very much excited about the game of cricket. Among the cricket crazy neighbors mention may be made of Mr. Khetrapal, Girish, Gautam and Bhola. Thus you can see the cricket fever that has caught the residents of H.H complex.
But in the midst of this there is a twist. The major is called to away to the battle front in Kargil to fight the Pakistani gunfire from across the border. The rest of the story deals with his wife's agony fearing her husband's safety while people around her in the cricket mood are oblivious to her plight. Here lies the crux of the story.
You can also see an anti-cricket campaign. This is headed by the secretary of Happy Home Complex, Mr. Subramaniam. Among the other residents who are actively participating in this campaign are Laltoo Singh. These members go to the extent of cutting the cable wire during the India-Sri Lanka semi-final match. They did this in order to subdue the cricket craziness and also to teach the residents a lesson.
The director has weaved in many sub plots in between 'cricket and war' such as an adolescent neighbor's crush on Reena, about a Punjabi household and a handful of characters but none developed well to leave any impact.
In the midst of the cricket mania, Baba a good man, visits the housing complex. He ultimately make Girish and Deshpande realize that their tension regarding India's chances of winning the world cup are insignificant in comparison to Raghav and the war he is fighting for the country.
Events reach a turning point when Reena receives the news that her husband Major Raghav is missing in action and has been presumed dead. She is completely shattered and the craze for the ongoing world cup fails to cast an impact on her.
