Sunil Dutt was one of the popular male actors in Bollywood who achieved immense commercial success between the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to being a fine actor he was also a producer, director and politician. Sunil Dutt was first introduced to the Hindi film industry in the 1955 film Railway Platform. The 1957 blockbuster film Mother India led him to become a star overnight. This was the film that got him many awards and accolades and shot him to instant stardom for his power packed performance. Sunil Dutt has been associated with all kinds of films ranging from romantic, melodrama, action and comedy.

Some of the successful films of Sunil Dutt include Sadhna, Sujata, Mujhe Jeene Do and Padosan. In the film Padosan he acted as the adorable innocent man next door and his comic timing was highly appreciated by the audience. Padosan remain a film that has been entertaining generations after generation. Sunil Dutt created a sort of record by starring in the film Yaadein where he was the only actor in the cast.

Later he extended his talents to producing and directing films but without much success. After collaboration with B.R. Chopra, Sunil Dutt had many successful films like Gumraah, Waqt and Hamraaz.

Some of the awards won by Sunil Dutt during his acting career include Glory of India Award" by IIAF, London, 2 Filmfare best actor award, one Filmfare lifetime achievement award and several others. He was also the recipient of the Padma Shri, which is the fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India. Not only was he a good actor but a wonderful human being and did much for his country before he died on 25th May 2005. He is succeeded by his son Sanjay Dutt who is also a popular star of Bollywood.
