He was one of those few actors who was extremely passionate about his work and was willing to play any character provided the role challenged his acting abilities. Sanjiv Kumar was initially associated with theatre and from there he joined the Filmalaya Acting School and did his first role in Hum Hindustani in 1960. As a hero his first film was Nishana produced in 1965 and though it not give him stardom he nevertheless made his mark in it.

Sanjiv Kumar first came to be noticed in a big way for his performance in Sanghash where he co-starred with actor Dilip Kumar. Gradually more lead offers came his way and he was paired opposite erstwhile popular actresses like Waheeda Rehman, Nutan and Mala Sinha among others. The film that shot him to stardom was Khilona in 1970 and was highly appreciated for his acting skills. Sanjiv Kumar won his first National Award as Best Actor for his fine performance in the film Dastak.

Later on he went on to win another National award for his performance in Koshish and several Filmfare awards.
