His parents, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor also happened to be one of the most celebrated romantic duo that Bollywood has ever produced. Acting and films thereby run in the blood of this young actor. However, according to his parents, there was no coercion on part of them for Ranbir to take up films. It was his on calling that he decided to take up films, just like his parents, grandparent, uncles and cousins.



Ranbir Kapoor made his debut in the film, "Sawaariya", meaning companion made by one of the most talented and artistic directors of the Bollywood industry, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Playing with leading actors like Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan, he was cast opposite to Sonam Kapoor another budding star-daughter. Based on the novel, White Nights by Dostoevsky, here Ranbir is cast as the dreamer and the singer, who is pursuing his love Sakina, played by Sonam Kapoor. Apart from this film, there are rumors that he has already signed up with Siddharth Anand for forthcoming movie. This unnamed film is being produced by the Yash Raj banner, where, Ranbir is to cast along with stars, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba.
