Amol Palekar is a well known actor of the 1970s and later a director of some very notable Indian movies. Born on 24th November, 1944 in a Maharashtrian Saraswat Brahmin family in Mumbai ( then Bombay), Amol Palekar is renowned for all The Unforgettable Characters in Bollywood that he had played over the years. He attended the Sir J. J. School of Art and first started acting on the stage in the Marathi language.

Amol Palekar first started with the Marathi experimental stage with Satyadev Dubey and after wards, in the year 1972 he started his own group named 'Aniket'. It was Amol Palekar who introduced theatre of the absurd in Maharashtra and a street theatre motivated practice of performing plays in the round. One of the most Popular Male Actors in Bollywood in his own time, Amol Palekar is well liked even today by all in the film industry.



In the year 1974, Amol Palekar was cast as an actor by director Basu Chatterjee in the movie 'Rajnigandha'. After this Amol Palekar performed in various many such roles in middle-class comedies often directed by Chatterjee or the renowned Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Some of his famous films include 'Golmaal', 'Chhoti Si Baat' and 'Naram Garam' and so on.
Amol Palekar turned from acting to direct films and his first directorial debut was a Marathi film, 'Aakriet'. He directed many other films like 'Ankahi', 'Thodasa Rumani Ho Jaye', 'Bangarwadi', and 'Daayraa' and so on. Amol Palekar even proved his capabilities as a director through his recent movie 'Paheli', which was also India's official entry in the race for Best Foreign Film in the year 2006 Oscar.
