Sahir Ludhianvi

Sahir Ludhianvi is one of the best lyricists of the Indian cinema. Born in the family of jagirdars in Ludhiana Punjab, Sahir Ludhianvi was initially known as Abdul Hayie. His father had many wives but he was the only child to him. The poet had a disturbed childhood. His mother decided to leave his father and got separated. The father fought for his custody but ultimately had to let him live with his mother. Sahir Ludhianvi was reared up with utmost care by his mother.

The lyricist had to pass through very tough times in his early age. Financial deprivation and fear of being taken away by his father had always lurked in his minds during his teen age. Sahir's poetic talents started blooming since his college days. He got very famous with his college mates for his superb poetry.

At the college this young poet falls for the daughter of a rich man. The end of his love story was very much predictable as he was far below the status of the girl's family. The girl's father did his best and got him expelled from college. By then Ludhianvi had complete his first collection, which finally got published as Talkhiyaan in 1945.



The poets lady luck began smiling on him since the publishing of his first collection. His career took a high when he was made the editor of prestigious Urdu magazines like Adab- e - lateef, Shahkar and Savera.

Sahir had worked with almost all the major music directors of the time. The poet began his Bollywood career with the film Azaadi ki raah par. His first poetry which was put to music was Badal Rahi hai zindagi. He shot into fame with the songs of Naujawaan. Sahir had a long association with S.D. Burman. They jointly gifted the Hindi film industry with plenty of everlasting songs. Sahir has also worked with famous composers like Ravi, Khayyam, Roshan, Jaidev and O. p. Nayyar
