Anjaan

Anjaan is the pseudo name of the famous Hindi poet Lalji Pandey who has contributed greatly to the music of Indian film. Anjaan was a resident of Varanasi and attended all kinds of big and small kavi sammelans. He used Urdu very little in his poetries but still left a mark of his creativity at every kavi-sammelans and mushairas. Anjaan is the first Lyricist in Bollywood who had come up with the usage of simple Hindi language in movie songs. Before him it was fashion in the industry to use Urdu words in song lyrics.

In 1953 Anjaan got his first break under the banner of Premnath production for the movie Prisoner Of Golconda. He wrote songs like 'Lehar Yeh Dole Koyal Bole' and 'Shaheedon Amar Hai Tumhari Kahani' for this movie. He was only getting small projects after this film. In his early days 'Mat Poonch Mera Hai Mera Kaun Watan' from the movie Lambe Haath was his only hit.

Anjaan first made his presence felt in the industry with the Movie called Godaan. He was flooded with a few prestigious projects after the success of this movie. He had an opportunity to work with directors like O. P. Nayyar ('Aap Ke Haseen Rukh') in Guru Dutt's Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi and G. P. Sippy's Bandhan. Finally he made a mark in the commercial movies with his chartbuster 'Bina Badraa Ke Bijuriya Kaise Barse'.

Anjaan could blend lyricism with poetry perfectly. The famous number in Do Anjaane ('Luk Chhip Luk Chhip Jao Na') in 1976 is the living instance of it. Some of the best films of Anjaan's career are Hera Pheri ('Barson Purana Yeh Yaarana'), Khoon Pasina (the title song and 'Bani Rahe Jodi Raja Rani Ki'), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar ('Rote Hue Aate Hain Sab', 'O Saathi Re', 'Pyar Zindagi Hai', 'Dil To Hai Dil'), Don 'Khaike Paan Banaras Wala', ('Ee Hai Bambai Nagariya', 'Jiska Mujhe Tha Intezaar'), Laawaris ('Jiska Koi Nahin', 'Kab Ke Bichhde') and Jaadugar.

Anjaan had written lyrics for most of Amitabh Bachchan's movies. He had worked with music composers like Rajesh Roshan, Bappi Lahiri and R. D. Burman His projects with Prakash Mehra also churned out hits like Zindagi Ek Juaa, Dalaal Jwalamukhi, Ghunghroo, Mohabbat Ke Dushman, Muqaddar Ka Faisla, Imaandaar, Chameli Ki Shaadi and Himalay Se Ooncha. Films like Do Aur Do Paanch, Yaarana ,Namak Halaal, Sharaabi and Mahaan are the milestones of his career .

In the 80's, Anjaan had written songs for plenty of Mithun Chakraborty films like Disco Dancer and Dance Dance. Other major hits of that period include Aandhi, Toofan, Ilzaam, Aag Hi Aag, Paap Ki Duniya and Tarzan.

The nineties saw him coming up with hit songs of Zindagi Ek Jua and Dalaal. 'Gori Hain Kalaiyan' (Aaj Ka Arjun) was a whopping 90s chartbuster which had swept away the masses for its attractive tune and excellent wordings.

Anjaan's last hit was Shola aur Shabnam in the year 1992, after which we haven't come across with any of his work yet.
