Anand Bakshi

One of the most popular lyricists in Bollywood, Anand Bakshi has produced excellent lyrics for famous Bollywood flicks till his demise on 30 March 2002 Mumbai. He was one of most popular Indian poets and lyricists in the Indian film industry.

Born in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, on 21 July in the year 1930, Anand Bakshi had a Kashmir lineage. Many of his forefathers were from Kuri. He lost his mother Sumitra at a tender age of 10. His family arrived in India on 2nd October in the year just after the partition in 1947. He was just 16 years old then.

In November 1947, he joined the Corps of Signals, and later worked as a switch board operator. He spent most of time in the next ten years of his life moving in and out of the army. In his leisure time wrote songs which he sang to his friends.



Anand Bakshi entered Bollywood to make become a successful singer. But destiny had something else in store for him. He produced some of the best lyrics for Bollywood movies and became a remarkable Bollywood lyricist over time. He got his first break in Bollywood movies as a lyricist in the year 1956 when he was assigned to write the lyrics for four songs by Bhagwan Dada for Brij Mohan's Bhala Aadmi. His career as a remarkable lyricist took off from Bhala Aadmi. Since then, there was no looking back for him. He has given the lyrics for over 300 films in his lifetime.

His real breakthrough came in the year 1967. After writing lyrics for over various movies he earned much reputation with the movie Milan, released in the year 1967. A Sunil Dutt starrer, Anand Bakshi got the opportunity for the first time to work with famous music directors in Indian cinema. He carved out a niche for himself as a versatile talent with Dum Maro Dum, one of the most popular songs in Indian Cinema in the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Following the remarkable musical success of Hare Rama Hare Krishna, he composed for super hits in the likes of Bobby, Amar Prem, Sholay, Hum, Mohra, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Taal, Mohabbatein and Gadar - Ek Prem Katha.

This popular song-writer succumbed to severe heart and lung disease in the fag end of his life as a result of heavy smoking throughout his life. In April 2001, he was infected with a bacterial infection at Nanavati Hospital, during a minor heart surgery. He died of organ failure on 30 March 2002 at Mumbai's Nanavati Hospital.
