Yash Johar was known as an excellent filmmaker, who churned out blockbusters and greatest Bollywood hits- both old and new. He was not only known as a successful filmmaker but also as a great human being who was involved in social welfare. Yash Johar had to his credit successful and entertaining movies like "Dostana", and produced movies like "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum" and "Kal Ho Na Ho".
Career:
Yash Johar began his career in the Bollywood film industry as a photographer and over the years he successfully mastered every aspect of filmmaking. He started his career in the 1950`s as a still photographer, and since then he directed and produced many blockbuster movies.
After he began his career in Bollywood in 1950`s he continued to rise as he got involved with different aspects of filmmaking. He worked as a production assistant with Sunil Dutt`s Ajanta Arts and assisted in making great films like "Mujeh Jeene Do" and "Yeh Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke".
Yash Johar soon joined Dev Anand`s banner Navketan and had a very important role in making of "Guide", which did a good business at the box office. He also got involved with the production of films like "Jewel Thief" and "Hare Rama Hare Krishna". During the years when he got involved with the production department, he earned a good reputation as one of the best production managers. He also got the chance to work with great directors and filmmakers like S.Mukherjee and others.
Yash Johar started his own production house in 1976 called Dharma Productions. He began producing his movies under his banner. His first film under this banner was Dostana starring the Big B and Shatrughan Sinha. It became a huge success and brought Yash Johar into limelight.
Yash Johar`s second film under his banner with Amitabh Bachchan, "Agnipath", received critical acclaim and gave Bachchan his first National Award. He also produced Gumrah starring Sridevi and Sanjay Dutt, which was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Later on he produced movies directed by his son Karan Johar. Karan made his debut as a director with "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" in 1998 under the banner Dharma Productions.
Yash Johar`s Dharma Productions churned out some of the biggest blockbusters like `Kuch Kuch Hota Hai`, `Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum` and `Kal Ho Na Ho`, which proved to be great Bollywood hits. His movies are known for beautiful presentation of screenplay embellished with beautiful locales, lavish sets, melodious music and excellent cinematography.
Yash Johar breathed his last on June 26 2004. His death was a major setback to Bollywood. The veteran filmmaker left behind a legacy that will be hard to emulate.
