V. Shantaram was one of the famous film makers who had defined cinema in a different manner. In his illustrious career as a film-director, V. Shantaram was very popular. As an esteemed filmmaker, V. Shantaram realized the necessity of film as a strong medium of social communication. Due to his notable presence in the Bollywood film industry, we got to see some of the best classics. Though he had no prior experience in film making, he still excelled as a film director.
The real name of V. Shantaram is Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram. Born in Kolhapur, V. Shantaram had gone through a great struggle. Initially, he worked in the railways as a teenager and after that he started his career in the theaters as a curtain puller. Later, V. Shantaram joined Maharashtra Film Company of Baburao Painter. Here, he learned the basic lessons of filmmaking. In the year 1929, he formed the Prabhat Film Company along with the participation of four other partners who were V.G. Damle, S. Fatelal, K.R. Dhaiber, and S.B. Kulkarni.
With his own film company, V. Shantaram created such great films those served both the audience of Marathi and Hindi.
In the year 1933, his film company, Prabhat moved to Pune. After shifting his company, V. Shantaram moved on to a totally different genre of film making. From then he started making historical and mythological films. These films were the considered as the great success of that period. Gradually, he improvised some technical aspects of film making and also took ideas from the German Expressionistic films.
As a director he made several great films which include Amrit Manthan in 1934, Amar Jyoti in 1936, Kunku (Marathi) or Duniya Na Maane (Hindi) in 1937, Manoos (Marathi) or Aadmi (Hindi) in 1939, Shejari (Marathi) or Padosi (Hindi) in 1941. Apart from his film making profession, V. Shantaram also produced several famous films. As a producer-director, the famous films of V. Shantaram were Amar Bhoopali (Marathi) in 1951, Dahej in 1950, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje in 1955, Navrang in 1959, Geet Gaya Patharon Ne in 1964 and Pinjra in 1972. Furthermore, V. Shantaram also acted in some films which include Shakuntala in 1943, Dr. Kotnis ki Amar Kahani in 1946, Do Ankhein Barah Haath in 1957. He was also produced and directed all these films. But as an actor Savkari Pash (1925) was a big hit of V. Shantaram.
