Tanuja Chandra forayed into Indian film industry in the year 1995 and made her directorial debut with the TV series "Zameen Aasmaan" that starred Tanvi Azmi in the main lead. Thereafter, she directed another television series called Mumkin in the year 1996 in which Shabnam Sukhdev played the main lead.
"Mumkin" was based on the story of hidden identities and secret lives that is led by one`s next door neighbours and near and dear ones. Zameen Aasmaan on the other hand successfully combined melodrama of weekly soaps with a sophisticated literary sense and focused on the conflicts of various characters in the serial. The clash of egos of the various characters and their ever-changing love-hate relationship served as a fodder for the twists and turns in this series.

In the year 1997, Tanuja Chandra devoted most of her time to write the screenplay for Yash Chopra`s "Dil To Pagal Hai`, which was a super success at the box office. Thereafter, she collaborated with Mahesh Bhatt and wrote the screenplay for his critically acclaimed film, Zakhm. Zakhm released in the year 1998 and in the same year she made her cinematic directional debut with a film called "Dushman."
Renowned Bollywood actress Kajol played the main lead in "Dushman" while Sanjay Dutt and Ashutosh Rana essayed other important characters in this film. The story and narrative techniques used in this film were applauded by the critics and it was well received by the movie goers as well.
Tanuja Chandra`s next film was Sangharsh that released in the year 1999 and was produced by Mahesh Bhatt. Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta starred in this film that revolved around child abduction and murders committed by a religious fanatic played by Ashutosh Rana. Preity Zinta plays a CBI trainee in this film who takes the help of Akshay Kumar`s character named Professor Aman Varma to stop Ashutosh Rana`s character on his murderous trail.
