Subhash Ghai


Born on January 24, 1945 Subhash Ghai is an Indian Bollywood director. Ghai is known for his notable contribution to Hindi film industry. Subhash completed his graduation in commerce from Rohtak, Haryana and moved to Pune, Maharashtra to learn cinema at the Film and Television Institute of India he attained a diploma from there and then started working in the Indian film industry in 1970.

He begin his career by directing his first film Kalicharan in 1976 which became one of the biggest hits of his time. This movie he got through a recommendation by Shatrughan Sinha. In 2005 he wrote and directed another 15 movies 13 became highly successful. In the year 1982 Subhash Ghai formed a company under the name Mukta Arts Private Limited. The company is operated under Subhash Ghai who is its chairman and also managing director.



Some of his most notable films are mentioned here like in 1980s were Karz (1980), Vidhaata (1982), Hero (1983), Karma (1986) and Ram Lakhan (1989). He won Filmfare Best Director awards for his another big box office hit Saudagar which was released in 1991. Another commercial success, Khalnayak came in the year 1993. Another two of his hits came in late 90s, Pardes in 1997 and Taal in 1999. Both movies were internationally released and featured in the Top 20 movies in the U.S. Box office charts for several weeks. The last two of his directions were Yaadein (2001) and Kisna (2005) were box office failures.

In the year 2006 he started his own film institute with name Whistling Woods International in Film City Bombay. Students are trained in this institute in different aspects of film making such as making - production, direction, cinematography, acting, animation and other technicalities. Some of his favorite or most preferred actors whom he often cast include names like Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sanjay Dutt, and Madhuri Dixit in his most successful films.

Subhash Ghai directed many films some of the famous names include Main Yuvraj (2008), Om Shanti Om (2007) , Special appearance in song, Om Shanti Om in the movie Karz., Kisna (2005), Yaadein (2001), Taal (1999), Pardes (1997), Khalnayak (1993), Saudagar (1991), Ram Lakhan (1989), Karma (1986), Meri Jung (1985), Hero, Vidhaata (1982), Krodhi (1981), Karz (1980), Gautam Govinda (1979), Vishwanath(1978), Kalicharan (1976).

Subhash Ghai also produced several films like Iqbal (2005), Joggers' Park (2003), Trimurti (1995), Good Boy, Bad Boy (2007), Apna Sapna Money Money in 2006 and produced Shaadi Se Pehle (2006), 36 China Town in 2006.
