Shaad Ali is the son of Muzaffar Ali and Subhashini Ali. Muzaffar Ali is a noted film producer and director and Subhashini Ali is an Indian politician and member of Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Shaad Ali Sehgal completed his studies from Welham Boy's School. Shaad Ali started his career as an assistant director to Mani Ratnam and he assisted Mani Ratnam on the film Dil Se in the year 1996. In 2007 he was also the assistant director of the film Guru.

He made his directorial debut under Yash Raj Films. In 2002 he directed Saathiya starring Rani Mukherji, Vivek Oberoi, Tanuja, Swaroop Sampat, Sharat Saxena and Satish Shah. The film was the remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Alaipayuthey (2000). Mani Ratnam wrote the script of Saathiya. The film helped him to gain recognition as Director Shaad Ali. For songs in Saathiya, Shaad Ali along with his star cast and crew traveled to Rameshwaram, Chettinad, Humpi, Goa and Manali. 2 superstars of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan and Tabu made a special appearance in the film.



Bunty Aur Babli in the year 2005 was the second film directed by Shaad Ali. This film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also made a guest appearance in the film. The film was a hit.

In June 2007 Shaad Ali released his third directed film. The title of the film was Jhoom Barabar Jhoom starring Bobby Deol, Abhishek Bachchan, Lara Dutta and Preity Zinta in leading roles. Amitabh Bachchan made a special appearance in the film. The music of the film toped the charts of musical countdowns in television and radio.

Shaad Ali's next film titled as Tevar will be released under Yash Raj Films. Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor will be in the leading roles. This will be Akshay Kumar's second film with Yash Raj after the forthcoming film Tashan.

Shaad Ali had directed a music video for Vasaundhara Das. The title of the music video was Meri Jaan. The music video was promoted and marketed by Magnasound. The video was excellently shot by Shaad Ali with the Taj Mahal as the backdrop. The music in the video comes with a strong Sufi influence, the backdrop of Taj Mahal and a pleasant journey of the singer who lives through a myth. The video has added glamour to Indi-pop.

Shaad Ali is one of the famous Indian directors and he is one of the finest film makers in Bollywood.
