Nikhil Advani is one of the top film makers in the Bollywood film industry. An erstwhile Assistant Director, Nikhil Advani turned to film direction with the film 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', which released in the year 2003. A phenomenal success of this film ensured that he does not have to look back again.
Nikhil Advani worked as Assistant Director in a number of films. He also prepared the script of the film 'Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin' (1996) and his self-directed film 'Salaam-E-Ishq' (2007). As a matter of fact, Nikhil Advani started working as Assistant Director with the film 'Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin'.
After working as Assistant Director in several Hindi movies, Nikhil Advani stepped into film making with 'Kal Ho Naa Ho'. Produced by renowned film maker-cum-producer Karan Johar, this film turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year 2003. Nikhil Advani had earlier assisted Karan Johar in directing films like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' (1998) and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' (2001). Being well aware of Advani's talent, Karan Johar decided that the film will be made under the banner of his production house - 'Dharma Productions'.
'Kal Ho Naa Ho' starred some of the big names in Bollywood. Arguably the most popular actor in Bollywood today - Shahrukh Khan - played the lead role in this film. Preity Zinta played the female lead, while Saif Ali Khan played the second male lead. It was a romantic film that was full of color, nice songs, and excellent dance sequences. Nikhil Advani won a special award for Distinction in Directorial Debut for this film at the Screen Weekly Awards. The movie also won the Best Film award at the Awards of the International Indian Film Academy.
The second directorial venture of Nikhil Advani is 'Salaam-E-Ishq'. Released in the early part of 2007, this film had an ensemble cast. Star actors like Salman Khan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra, and Vidya Balan starred in the film. It was a film about six couples, each having their individual story, but all converges to a common ending. However, despite the great star cast and some excellent music, the film did not fare well at the box office.
Nikhil Advani is presently working on two films - 'Ab Dilli Door Nahin' and 'Chandni Chowk to China'. Both films are expected to release in the year 2009. Already counted among the best film directors in Bollywood, Nikhil Advani would definitely achieve more glory with these films.
