Mrinal Sen is a well known Bengali filmmaker. Being one of the famous filmmakers of India, Mrinal Sen also made Hindi films which were critically acclaimed. Some of the famous Bollywood movies made by Mrinal Sen are Padatik in 1973, Mrigayaa in 1976, Khandhar in 1984, Genesis in 1986, Ek Din Achanak in 1989, Ek Adhuri Kahani in 1972, Chorus in 1974, and Bhuvan Shome in 1969. With his active participation in politics, Mrinal Sen is known as one of the most politically active filmmakers of India.

Mrinal Sen was born on 14th May in 1923 in the small town of Faridpur in Bangladesh. In that place, he completed his high school education and afer that he came to former Calcutta to study Physics at the Scottish Church College and at the University of Calcutta. During his student life, he was actively involved with the cultural wing of Communist party but he was never considered among the party members. Later, he was introduced with the socialist Indian People`s Theater Association or IPTA. In this organization, he met with several culturally associated people and from this period the cultural interest was developed in Mrinal Sen.




The first feature film made by Mrinal Sen was Raatbhor in the year 1955. after this film, he made Neel Akasher Neechey which was much praised by film critics. The third film of Mrinal Sen was Baishey Shravan and it was also successful to achieve international admiration. Apart from these films, the other films of Mrinal Sen are Punascha in 1961, Abasheshe in1963, Pratinidhi in 1964, Akash Kusum in 1965, Matira Manisa in 1966, Bhuvan Shome in 1969, Interview in 1970, Ek Adhuri Kahani in 1971,
Padatik in 1973, Chorus in 1974, Mrigaya in 1976, Oka Uri Katha in 1977, Parasuram in 1978, Ek Din Pratidin in 1979, Akaler Sandhane in 1980, Chalchitra in 1981, Kharij in 1982, Khandhar in 1983, Mahaprithivi in 1991, Antareen in 1993 and Amar Bhuban in 2002.

Besides feature films, Mrinal Sen also made some short films which are Ichhapuran, Aparajit, Kabhi Door Kabhi Paas, Ravivar, Do Bahene, Saalgira, Ajnabi, Das Saal Baad, Jit and many others. For his excellent direction in films, Mrinal Sen got several awards through his lifetime. In the year 1981, he got Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India and in 2005, he got Dadasaheb Phalke Award by the Government of India.
