Mira Nair was born and brought up in Rourkela at Orissa. She hails from a middle class Punjabi family. Mira`s father was a civil servant and mother was a social worker. Being the youngest among three children in the Nair family, Mira was pampered a lot.

Mira Nair did schooling from Tara Hall in Shimla. Mira Nair did a major in sociology from Delhi University. At this time, Mira Nair grew a keen interest in political street theater. Mira Nair started her film career with documentaries like India Cabaret. The film centers around the lives of bar girls in a Bombay nightclub. India Cabaret won an award at the American Film Festival in the year1986.

Nair made her directorial debut in the year 1988 with the film Salaam Bombay. The film deals with the lives of young boys working as child labor in Mumbai. The film won BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for a number of international awards including the Academy Award and Golden Globe.

Mira Nair`s Mississippi Masala, which dealt with a love story, set in the South America and Uganda, won three awards at the Venice Film Festival including Best Screenplay and The Audience Choice Award.
