Karan Johar is one of the younger generation of filmmakers in Bollywood earning great success with his movies, most of which are box office hits. He first made his entrance in the filmmaking realm of Bollywood with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 and showed great talent for direction. This was indeed his first work where he got a chance for independent direction. The film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a multi starring film, where Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee all bagged the best actor awards. The film was an instant box office hit getting eight Filmfare Awards including the best movie award. Karan Johar got the best director award for his first successful direction work.
Karan Johar entered the Hindi movie scenario taking the example of his father, Yash Johar, an eminent personality in the world of Indian cinema. He first assisted the famous director Aditya Chopra in writing the screenplay for the film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, a great hit in 1995 and soon started independently directing and producing films under the banner of Dharma Productions, his own company.
One of the most interesting things about Karan Johar is, he showed talents in costume designing and choice for Shah Rukh Khan in a number of his successful movies like: Dil To Pagal Hain, Duplicate, Mohabbatein, Main Hoon Na and Veer-Zara.
Nevertheless Karan Johar has great talents for direction, which he soon exhibited in his second film Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, which being a multistarred romantic comedy, gained instant applaud by the audience nation wide. The film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham won five Filmfare awards with the best director award going to Johar. This young filmmaker Karan Johar showed unparalleled mastery in writing scripts, which he showed with the gripping storyline in his movie Kal Ho Na Ho, released in the year 2003. Karan Johar showed immense mastery in both direction and screenplay after producing the cinematic version of his pre-written script titled: Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta, the film ruled the box office after its release on 11th August 2006.
The glorious change for the better came in the life of Karan Johar with the instant national success of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna that earned him, not only national but also international fame. After his fabulous successes in numerous Award Ceremonies that he hosted, Karan was selected to be a jury in the Miss World Competition in Warsaw, Poland in 2006. He has also been chosen as one of the 250 Global Young Leaders by the World Economic Forum in Geneva and is a world figure today.
