Hrishikesh Mukherjee the great Hrishi-da of Bollywood Film Industry brought revolution in filmmaking with his unconventional yet highly entertaining movies. All his movies were great box office hits and enthralled a million of audiences nationwide. Born in 20th September 1922, Mukherjee earned fame in th4e Hindi movie scenario with his successful films like Satyakam, Chupke Chupke, Anand, Bawarchi and Namak Haraam. Hrishikesh Mukherjee began his filmmaking career on working with Bimal Roy, another great maestro of Indian cinema. He was the assistant director in Bimal Roy's epoch making works, like: Do Bigha Zameen and Devdas, in which the famous actor Balraj Sahni appalled the audiences with his acting.
The most unique thing about Hrishikesh Mukherjee is the fact that his first directorial work Musafir failed to be a success, however, the man who was born with talent in filmmaking soon touched the sky of expectation with his next hits. Starting his career as a cameraman and a film editor in New Theaters, then run by B.N. Sircar he soon was recognized by the Bollywood Film Industry for his gifted attributes in making successful movies.
The second film in the career of the great filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee was Anari in the year 1959, which was an instant success. Starring the legendary romantic Hero Raj Kapoor and Nutan the film won immense applause from the audience.
The life of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, one of the greatest filmmakers in Bollywood soon took to a glorious turn with his film Anari and soon he was granted the Filmfare Award for the Best Director. Starting with Anuradha, Anand and Bawarchi he soon made numerous films that all were a success. Hrishikesh Mukherjee showed his talents as a director in bringing out the greatest films in Bollywood, whose names are now taken as legendary works by the great genius in filmmaking. While Anuradha, Asli Nakli and Anupama were the hits of the early and mid 1960s, films like Aashirwad, Satyakama and Guddi followed them as super hits in the late 60s and early 70s'. In all of his movies, filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee upheld the life of the common mass and tried to express their pleasures, pains and shortcomings that they face in their daily struggle for existence.
Guddi, Bawarchi, Mili and Bemisal were the next instant box office hits that followed and Hrishikesh Mukherjee soon became a legendary figure in the world of Indian cinema. Anand was a spectacular work by Hrishikesh Mikherjee were Rajesh Khanna performed his all time best in the role of a cancer patient who still holds a positive outlook toward life. Guddi released in 1971 was an instant hit and was remembered as one of the most touching film after Anand. The great director died of mild cardiac arrest on 27th August 2006 in the Leelavati Hospital in Mumbai.

In the following years he made numerous films. Some of his most notable films include: Anuradha 1960, Asli-Naqli 1962, Anupama 1966, Aashirwad 1968, Satyakam 1969, Guddi 1971, Bawarchi 1972, Mili 1975, Chupke Chupke 1975 and Bemisal 1982. He was the first to introduce Dharmendra in comedy roles. Mukherjee was also responsible for casting Amitabh Bachchan in a prominent role in Anand (film) 1970, along with Rajesh Khanna.He introduced Jaya Bhaduri to Hindi cinema in his film Guddi.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee was admitted to Leelavati Hospital in Mumbai early on Tuesday, 6th June 2006 after after he complained of uneasiness. Mukherjee passed away ten weeks later on August 27, 2006. He is survived by three daughters and a son.
