National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in India is a central governing body, founded in 1975, for promotion of movies in India. National Film Development Corporation aims at planning and undertaking certain responsibilities for development of the film industry. NFDC also shoulders the responsibility of developing the state of the art technology in the audio visual fields. The organization from the moment of its inception has contributed in around 300 films and provides services for the betterment of Indian cinema.

National Film Development Corporation was reconstituted in the year 1980 following merging of the body with Film Finance Corporation ( FFC) and Motion Picture Export Corporation (MPEC). The organization usually produces and finances the films which deals with social issues. Films that are experimental and creative in nature are also produced by National Film Development Corporation. The body further deals with pre production and post production facilities with the aid of latest technologies. Financial aid to construction of theatre is also the area of interest of NFDC.



National Film Development Corporation, in the last few years have undertaken various measures for the promotion and development of Indian cinema. They organize Indian Panorama, Film Weeks and constitute National Film Agency for popularizing Indian movies. NFDC organizes Film Festival every year which becomes a meeting ground for filmmakers and members of Indian film industry and also that of other nations. These Film Festivals exhibit Indian movies in Hindi as well as other regional languages. Foreign films and films in different foreign languages are also shown.

National Film Development Corporation also work in collaboration with foreign production houses. "Gandhi", directed by Sir Richard Attenborough was the first film that was released under the joint production of NFDC and a foreign production house. "The Making of the Mahatma", " Maya Mem Saaab" "The Show Goes On" and "Salam Bombay" are some other films that were released under joint production banner. This strategy has encouraged many directors to direct films with limited budget but with good story line and standard quality.

NFDC has a film center in Kolkata equipped with production facilities and Millennia Laser Unit. This facility has been immense helpful for the fillmakers specially those of eastern region. National Film Development Corporation is not only entitled to the development of Indian film industry but also aids the film industry of Sri Lanka, Iran and other neighboring countries.

Some of the films produced by National Film Development Corporation are Ek Din Pratidin, Arayanak, Tarpan, Sanshodhan, Amodini, Anu Hemonter Pakhi, Shantham, Uttoran, Dharavi, Chorus Bandh Jharokhe and Sati.
