Shubeer Sen, the father of Sushmita Sen, was the Wing Commander of the Indian air Force and Subhra Sen, and her mother, was a jewelery designer and fashion artist. She has two siblings, brother Rajeev Sen and sister, Neelam Sen. Her first school was Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute and she wanted to be a journalist. But, fate had some other plans for Sushmita Sen, and she became a world renowned model at the age of nineteen.

Sushmita Sen won the the title of Miss India Beauty pageant, by defeating her close contestant Aishwarya Rai. Though Rai won the preliminary round titles, Sushmita went on to to win the tiltle by answering intelligently in the final question answer round. After achieving the title of 'Miss India - Universe', in the Miss India Beauty Pageant -1994, Sushmita Sen set an example for the future models, by winning the title of Miss Universe, thus proving the fact that the Indians are a perfect combination of beauty and brains.



Like other famous models, she also wanted to try her luck in Bollywood. 'Dastak' (1996) is her first Bollywood film. Though it failed as per the box office standards, her work was appreciated by critics. Soon, she was able to showcase her talent in the hit Tamil movie, 'Ratchagan'. Some other popular Bollywood movies of Sushmita Sen are 'Biwi No.1', 'Sirf Tum', 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya', and 'Main Aisa Hi Hoon'. One of her most outstanding performances till date is in the film 'Samay', where she played the role of a Police Inspector, who was faced with a challenge that is to put a serial killer behind bars. However, Sushmita received great appreciation for the movie 'Filhaal'.

Sushmita Sen was received the Filmfare Aware for the category of with Best Supporting Actress for the movie, Biwi No.1'. She also received the Star Screen Award and the Zine Cine Awards in the same category. Some other movies for which she was nominated for the categiory of Best Supporting Actress are 'Filhaal' and 'Main Hoon Na'. In the year 2006, Sushmita Sen received the Rajiv Gandhi Award for her outstanding achievement in Bollywood.
