Introduced to the world of movies by eminent Oscar winning director, Satyajit Ray, Sharmila Tagore is one of popular female actors in Bollywood, or more precisely, one of the legends of Bollywood. She was born on 8th December, in the year 1946 at Kanpur in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. After getting married to renowned cricketer, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, she got a new name, which is Ayesha Sultana Khan, though she is more popular as Sharmila Tagore. Amongst her children, Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan have stepped into this glamor industry, but Saba Ali Khan do not have any direct involvement with Bollywood.

Born in a renowned Bengali family of Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, she is one of those actresses who got a taste of success at quite a young age. This beautiful daughter of Gitindranath Tagore started her acting career with 'Apur Sansar', one of the best films of Satyajit ray. This movie, which is a part of the Apu Trilogy ( a series of three films) hit the cinema halls in the year 1959. It was followed by 'Devi', another film by Satyajit Ray. She was just 14 years of age, when she became a popular actress. In these two film,Sharmila Tagore starred opposite Soumitra Chatterjee , one of the best actors of Bengal. .



After achieving success in Bengali movies, this daughter of Gitindranath Tagore went on to conquer the hearts of Hindi Cinema audience. With 'Kashmir Ki Kali', which paired her opposite Shammi Kapoor, she became a well known face in Hindi Cinema, which hit the halls in the year 1964. This was followed by 'An Evening In Paris', and some other popular films such as 'Mere Humdum mere Dost', 'Daag', 'Namkeen', 'Chupke Chupke,' 'Desh premee' and 'AA Gale lag Jaa'. She also continued to act in various Bengali movies, too at the same time. Some of the most memorable films of Sharmila Tagore that deserves a mention are 'Amar Prem', 'Aradhana', 'Mausam', 'Mississippi Masala', 'Nayak' ( Bengali movie) and 'Abar Aranye' ( Bengali movie). Till date, Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore are one of the popular on screen pair of Hindi cinema.
