It is a tale about Geeta (Zarina Wahab) who is the daughter of a headmaster. One day her father gets a letter from Geeta's elder sister informing him arrival of an engineer which can be a perfect match for Geeta. The family arranges for the arrival of the engineer. The family extended a warm welcoming to Vinod (Amol Palekar) who takes an instant liking towards Geeta.

She too reciprocates his feelings and gets recognition from the rest of the family. After a while, Geeta's father Pitamber Chaudhri receives another letter from his eldest daughter informing him that the young engineer is yet to arrive to Madhupur. A great bewilderment was caused by this news. Chaudhri once again goes to the station to receive the newcomer. Sunil, the newcomer is introduced to the headmaster who happens to be Vinod's boss. On arriving and meeting the Chaudhri family, Sunil decides to marry Geeta.

Geeta is informed of the misunderstanding by her father but she is determined of marrying Vinod. Ironically when Vinod deduces the true intention of his boss he decides to leave Madhupur in a gesture of sacrifice. On the day when Vinod is to leave Madhupur Geeta goes to the railway station in order to persuade him to return. The culmination of the story is when Geeta is influenced by Sunil to go back to the engagement ceremony and Vinod is found waiting there and getting engaged with Geeta.
