The story of Sekhar & Sanjana, Pyar To Hona Hi Tha starts off from France where Sanjana played by Kajol lives. She lives with her uncle played by Harish Patel and is about to marry Rahul, her love played by Vijay Anand. The movie starts with Rahul preparing to go for a business trip to India. While Sanjana of Pyar To Hona Hi Tha insists on accompanying him.



But Sanjana who is scared of not only flights but of flying too is skeptical about the whole plan from the very beginning. When the plane is ready for take off she gets agitated. She gets off the plane and creates a chaos. Rahul flies off to India without her. Later during the daily calls by Rahul to Sanjana, he reveals that he has fallen in love with Nisha played by Kashmira Shah. Rahul expresses his desires not to go back to France and marry Sanjana.

With her love at stake Sanjana decides to bring back Rahul even by overcoming her fear of flying. From this point the story of Sekhar & Sanjana, takes a new turn. In the plane she sits next to a passenger named Shekhar which is played by Ajay Devgan. The character, Shekhar of Pyar To Hona Hi Tha realizes Sanjana's fear of flying. He diverts her attention by speaking to her and helps her to get over the critical situation.

In the flight Sanjana accidentally spills drink on Shekhar. She realizes that he is concealing something. Shekhar enters the toilets and takes out a plant from his pocket. He removes the cloth covering the plant which hides a stolen diamond necklace from Paris. He is in fact a thief and has managed to hid this necklace in the plant. They reach India and Sanjana realizes her luggage is stolen.

Shekhar also helps Sanjana to find the missing baggage's since he had hid some of his stolen goods into one of her baggage. They strike a deal of helping each other and Shekhar promises to help Sanjana to get back Rahul. She pursues Rahul to Palam Beach. Slowly Shekhar falls in love with Sanjana. But she still loves Rahul and wants to separate him from Nisha. Therefore she plots to make him jealous by posing as couples in love with Shekhar.

Later Rahul learns that Sanjana is a rich heiress and this breaks his relationship with Nisha. Unfortunately by then, Sekhar & Sanjana, Pyar To Hona Hi Tha have fallen in love with one another. An usual happy ending follows when Shekhar expresses his love for Sanjana.
