Satyapriya (Dharmendra)`s mother dies before he was born. His father becomes an ascetic. His grandfather (Ashok Kumar) was a Sanskrit scholar. He brings up Satyapriya who becomes an engineer. Satyapriya was a righteous man. He got a job at a princely state. Here, Satyapriya comes across Ranjana (Sharmila Tagore). She was about to be sexually exploited by a Prince who was the employer of Satyapriya.
Satyapriya was aware of her love towards him. But he hesitates to rescue her from the Prince. Ranjana was raped by the landlord. Thus, Satyapriya felt that he betrayed his conscience, not to mention his ethical behavior. Out of sheer guilt he marries Ranjana. He was disowned by his grandfather. Satyapriya takes up several jobs but due to his ideals he could not settle at one place.
Ranjana wanted to lead a normal life while Satyapriya repented for his mistake. A series of intra or inter struggles between Satyapriya and Ranjana of Satyakam carries on. Finally, Satyapriya breaks down and he sacrifices himself for the paradoxical ideals of his grandfather. It was only his death that revealed the paradoxical principles of his grandfather.
Satyapriya and Ranjana in Satyakam are the characters that are worth watching out. The strong performances by both actors certainly deserve words of praise. Satyakam is a movie that puts light on issues like unemployment, rampant corruption and continual poverty.
