Rishi & Roja in the movie Roja symbolizes the real relationship between a husband and a wife. The film Roja revolves around the theme depicting the love and belief of a devoted wife and a man's love for his country. Rishi & Roja in Roja shows the character and the strength of a cordial relationship between a husband and a wife.
Rishi and Roja are the two main characters on which is based the theme of Roja. Roja was originally made in Tamil by Mani Ratnam which brought him into the list of famous and most successful directors in Hindi Cinema though he already had earned fame in South India with his movies. The popularity of the film in its original version led the producers to dub it in different Indian languages that increased its popularity levels and has actually made it as its stands today 15 years after its release. The music of A. R. Rahman gave him what he deserved.
Rishi played by Arvind Swami and Roja by Madhoo gave a new dimension to Indian Cinema. It depicted the true nature of the Indian society and the firm belief and devotion of Indian women towards their husband. On the other side the movie displayed a very strong sense of patriotism and love of a man towards his motherland.
The story of Roja is based on a man's love for his motherland and the wife's love for her husband. Roja, a chirpy village girl is married to a handsome suitor and top national cryptologist, Rishi (Arvind Swami). The two gets married and the relationship of love and faith develops between them till they are separated by abduction. The cryptologist is kidnapped by the militants of Jammu and Kashmir for the release of their leader Wasim Khan from Indian prison.
Roja's dream world is now shattered as all her pleadings for Rishi's release with top officials and military proves futile. She decides to brave all odds to track out her husband by herself. In the process she comes across the leader of the terrorist group and negotiates the release. This softens the brutal terrorist leader to some extent. In the meantime, Rishi also tries his heart out to escape to safety and finally succeeds. The movie ends with the reunion of Rishi and Roja and the victory of love and determination.
Roja was awarded with several prestigious awards in different categories in the Filmfare Awards 1993. It was also nominated for the Golden St. George Award in the 1993, Moscow International Film Festival (Russia). This movie also catapulted Mani Ratnam as a director and A. R. Rahman in the Musical arena. Rishi and Roja became the famous reel life couple of the year.
