Her parents come to drop her at the bus depot and meets Raja Chowdhury who is a photo-journalist also on his way to Calcutta. Meenakshi`s parents request Raja to take care of Meenakshi on the way and Raja agrees to do it.
The bus takes a different route on the way since the regular route was closed to traffic. After sometime, the bus comes to a halt as several vehicles stand ahead. The passengers come to know that there is a communal attack on a train as a result of which about 200 train passengers are killed.
The area is inhabited by predominantly Hindus and many extremists believe that the attack was made by Muslims. In the bus, Meenakshi comes to know that Raja is a Muslim and his real name is Jehangir. The conservative Tamil housewife Meenakshi is shocked.
A group of communal extremists gets into the bus and enquires about the religious identity of each passenger. However, when they come near the seat of Raja and Meenakshi, she saves Raja`s life. She gives her son to Raja and introduces Raja and herself as a couple, Mr and Mrs Iyer.
In spite of her initially despise towards Raja, Meenakshi gradually gets attracted to him. During the curfew, the couple spends days in a secluded bungalow and it is during their stay here that both understands and develops a liking for each other. However, this sublime chord of love is broken once Meenakshi reaches her destination. Here she introduces Raja to her husband as a person, who helped her a lot during the travel.
