One of the biggest blockbusters of the 1989, Maine Pyar Kiya almost immortalized the characters of Prem & Suman - the protagonists of the movie. This huge hit made Prem & Suman household names. Directed by the famous Bollywood director Sooraj R. Barjatya under the Rajashree Productions Maine Pyar Kiya showed the Indian audience that the spirit of love that can overcome all problems. Many are of the opinion that it is the freshness of the characters, especially Bhagyashree aka Suman which captured the heart of the Indian audience.
The story starts with two friends Kishan and Karan. Although they are good friends they have stayed away from each other for a long time. While Kishan becomes immensely successful Karan remains a poor engineer. Karan who is a simpleton by heart fails to recognize the differences and has immense faith on his childhood friend. He decides to leave his daughter in safe hands with Kishan while he works abroad. Suman who initially finds the huge mansion and the ways of the city a little intimidating finds a good friend in Prem, son of Kishan.
Prem & Suman become close to each other and for a brief period of time they are blissfully happy with this platonic friendship. Their friendship is however challenged by a bunch of rich kids who accuse Suman of being after Prem's money. They humiliate her and stress on the fact that it is not mere friendship but love. They also show her the difference between their classes. The story takes a definite turn when Prem too realizes that he has fallen for the girl. When Kishan comes to know about the affair he humiliates Karan by telling him that he was trying to make a match.
After Suman and his father leave the city, Prem sets out to win the heart of the girls' father. After much deliberation, tears, twists and turns Prem & Suman finally get married. The story shows the sheer triumph of love over everything. The characters seem to speak for thousands of other couples who bow down before parental pressure. This famous reel life couple portrayed the sentiments of the common Indians. This typical rich-boy-falls-in-love-with-the poor girl story has its own appeal in the Indian context.
Barjatya has taken special care to depict the story in an Indian context where both the children stand up for love but not against any traditions. They defy the unjust request of their parents to show that love conquers all. Not for once have Prem & Suman defied the values and traditions which are imbibed in them as part of their upbringing.
Salman Khan who played the role of Prem became the heartthrob of many and his appealing charm had girls swooning over him. Bhagyashree who was a newcomer impressed everyone with her girl-next-door innocent looks. This reel life couple had made an impact which lasts even now.
