Kalyani & Bikash, Bandini are the main lead characters of one of the most popular films of Bimal Roy. The combination of Bimal Roy and Nutan was par excellence and together they gave cinematic gems like Sujata and Bandini. The term coined for them was "sensitive". Kalyani & Bikash, Bandini are one of the most accepted and well loved characters of Indian cinema.
The character of Kalyani is played by the effervescent Nutan. She has played the role of an inmate of a women's ward of a prison in pre-independent India. She appears to be determined to serve out her full term. Here she meets Deven, the other lead character of the story.
The character of Kalyani becomes clearer when her story is told in the flashback. During the 1930s, Kalyani stayed with her postmaster father in Bengal. At that time she became romantically involved with Bikash Ghosh, an anarchist. In a difficult situation she is passed off as the wife of Bikash in order to save his life. This further strengthens their relationship. For some reason Biksh betrays Kalyani and marries some other woman.
Kalyani endures all the pain and leaves her village with her father to escape being the butt of ridicule. Kalyani is portrayed as a woman who has the capacity to take her own decisions and bear the consequences. She poisons the wife of Bikash when she comes to the hospital for treatment.
The character of Deven is played by Dharmendra. He is a Doctor who shows interest in Kalyani and wishes to marry her. Though he is aware of the past record of Kalyani yet he overlooks all the flaws and believes her to be good. He manages to even convince Kalyani to marry him and take him as her husband.
The scenes between Kalyani and Deven are very beautifully handled and depicted in a subtle manner. The love story that started as an one sided affair from Deven developed into a mutual affair. Kalyani gave her consent to marry Deven but luck had something else in store for them.
Kalyani came across Bikash, who was by then terminally ill. Kalyani's heart melts when she hears about the unsuccessful marriage of Bikash. She feels herself broken into two halves by the love of Deven on one side and Bikash on the other. She however decides to go with Bikash. The love between Kalyani and Deven though remains incomplete; it also shows the undying love that Deven has for Kalyani. Love does not always mean getting, it also means sacrifice and this movie is the perfect example.
