Ashok &Uma, Anupama are one of the most well liked characters of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He is known for his more successful rollicking comic adventures. This movie is one of the best works of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Ashok and Uma play the main leads in the movie.
The character of Uma is played by Sharmila Tagore. Uma is a shy and retreating girl who grows up with the stigma of guilt. Her father blames for having lost her mother during childbirth. Her father's attitude towards her makes her withdraw into a shell. The audiences cannot help but pity her. The story depicts a sad journey of how she overcomes her own guilt and steps out of her father's domineering shadow.
Sharmila Tagore has very beautifully played the character of Uma. Despite of having very few words to say, she beautifully embodies the repressed, melancholy character, of Uma. Her eyes express most of her emotions.
The scenes between Uma and her father are poignant, and are sensitively handled. Deep inside, Sharma does love his daughter. However this love remains hidden by his hatred for her. The love only shows when he is drunk, and not in his senses.
The character of Ashok is played by Dharmendra, one of the most popular actors in Hindi cinema. Ashok plays the role of a writer by profession and from a modest background. He has a keen mind and is quick to notice Uma's anguish. The sorrow of Uma brings, the two - Uma and Ashok closer.
There is an unspoken love that develops between Ashok and Uma. The love, which threatens to die unrequited, is very beautifully portrayed in the movie. Ashok understands the father's grief, but resents his unawareness and neglect of his daughter. Ashok tries his level best to clear the misunderstandings and bring some happiness into the life of Uma.
The whole story of Anupama revolves around Uma overcoming her internal barriers and taking the step to be with the person she loves. The chemistry between Uma and Ashok leaves a deep impression upon the mind of the audiences. The silent love story moves he hearts of the audiences.
