Story of Anand and Pushpa, Amar Prem:

Pushpa is a beautiful young woman who has lost her parents. She is brought up in a small village by her uncle, Nepali Babu. Her uncle being nasty and money minded sells her in a brothel in Calcutta (now known as Kolkata).

Pushpa is forced into dancing and singing in the brothel. On her first performance before the customers, she comes face to face with Anand Babu. Anand Babu is a rich business man of the city. He is unhappy and lonely fellow, in the middle of a bad marriage.

Pushpa performs before Anand Babu and other men. Her sweet voice attracts Anand Babu. From the very first day, he becomes Pushpa's exclusive customer. On more visits by Anand Babu to the brothel, romance develops between them. Both of them share the feeling of abandonment and loneliness. Anand Babu assists Pushpa to come to terms with her life.

Later, a widower from Pushpa's village comes in the neighborhood. He resides in a house, some blocks away from Pushpa's place. He is accompanied by his second wife and little son Nandu. Nandu is treated badly by his stepmother when his father is away from work. Gradually the boy is drawn to Pushpa who showers him with motherly love and affection. She treats him like her own son.

Pushpa feels her life is now complete. She dreams of a happy family with Anand Babu and Nandu in mind. Sadly, Pushpa's dream is only short lived. With pressures from Anand Babu's family, Pushpa decides to not to meet him any more. She snaps her relationship from Anand Babu. Nandu also shifts with his parents in another town. Pushpa is left lonely once more.

Pushpa is left to struggle by herself. Years pass by and Pushpa is now shown in the movie as an old woman. She manages her livelihood by washing dishes at a lowly restaurant. Anand Babu returns back to her life leaving behind his money and wife. They are both united after years of sorrows, struggle and sacrifices.

Anand Babu also united Pushpa with Nandu, who is a successful engineer. Nandu takes Pushpa home and away from all the hardships.
