In 1932 salesman Herman W. Lay opened a snack food operation in Nashville in Tennessee. In 1938 he purchased the "Barrett Food Company" and renamed it as "H.W. Lay & Company." In the year 1942 Lay introduced the first continuous potato processor. This resulted in the first large-scale production of the potato chips.

In the year 1944 Herman shortened the name to "the Lay's Company". He was the first snack food manufacturer who became very popular. He purchased various television commercials and signed in Bert Lahr as a celebrity spokesman. In the year 1961 lay's merged with the Frito Company and became Frito-Lay Inc. Frito-Lay products presently control 55% of the United States salty foods marketplace.

The tag line of Lay's has become famous and it goes like this "no one can eat just one". In India Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan was signed in as its brand ambassador.
