Salil Ankola

To watch cricket or bollywood movies are the most favorite pastimes in India and a number of cricketers have tried their luck in the bollywood movies. Salil Ankola, a former Indian cricketer who played in one Test and 20 ODIs from 1989 to 1997, is one of those who have appeared on the silver screen. Salil Ankola was also a member of the Indian cricket squad for the 1996 Cricket World Cup.

Salil Ankola, playing Indian Domestic Cricket for Mumbai, was a right arm fast medium bowler and a right hand batsman. A commerce graduate from Pune, Ankola started playing serious cricket when he entered the 11th standard. His consistent performances for Mumbai earned him a call for representing the country in various tours. He made his test debut in the same match with Sachin Tendulkar in Pakistan.

But Ankola was the victim of the inconsistencies of the selectors. Though he was selected on a number of tours in the 14 members' squad, he was often dropped from subsequent tours without even getting an opportunity. And so being dropped from the Indian team without getting a game was wittily known in cricket sphere as being 'Ankolad'.

It is told that when fate closes one door, it opens another. With his smart and handsome looks it was no surprise that Ankola started receiving offers for films and television. Ankola's Greek God like well-chiseled looks and macho physique made him many a young lady's heart throb. He made his debut in a TV serial known as 'Chahat Aur Nafrat' and it drew instant attention.

Then came 'Kora Kagaz', which continues its successful run on Star Plus. He has also appeared in the popular TV serials 'Khaki' and 'Kurukshetra'. Ankola has also performed in a show with Balaji Telefilms called 'Karam Apna Apna' where he has played the role of a successful businessman and the father of Mohammad Iqbal Khan.

He signed his first movie with Mahesh Manjarekar and has acted 5 movies so far. He has acted in the movie 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne' starring Esha Deol and Zayed Khan. Apart from this, some other movies where Ankola has performed include:
  • Pratidwand (2007)
  • Silence Please - The Dressing Room (2004): As Cricket Team Captain
  • Pitaah (2002): As Krishna, Shiva'S Son
  • Kurukshetra (2000): As Avinash
However, Salil Ankola is seeking to make a mark of a different kind, as an actor on the small as well as on the big screen.
