V.K. Murthy

V.K. Murthy is one of the most renowned cinematographer of the Hindi film Industry. It is through the deft hands of V.K. Murthy that many an artistic shots of Guru Dutt's classical movies have been framed.

Born in Mysore, Venkatarama Pandit Krishnamurthy, studied in Lakshmipuram School. Besotted by the visual media, he deserted his studies and went to Mumbai. His first cinematographic venture was "Jaal". He was then under the tutelage of Fali Mistry.

V.K. Murthy ran into Guru Dutt for the first time while working for "Famous Studios" as an assistant cameraman. Having gained sufficient expertise he suggested a difficult shot to Guru Dutt. But Dutt was certain his cameraman would not be able to execute it. So Murthy requested him to seek his cameraman's permission for him to attempt the shot. Guru Dutt asked him to finish it off within three takes.

But Murthy's mastery over the subject enabled him complete it in the very first take. After the day's pack Guru Dutt asked Murthy to continue as the cameraman for his film. But Murthy felt it was highly improper to dethrone Guru Dutt's cinematographer in the midst of a film. So he turned the offer down and instead offered himself as a cinematographer for Dutt's next film.

V.K. Murthy then went on to work with all the films of the maverick actor-director Guru Dutt. His cinematography reached the pinnacle of glory when his lighting techniques in "Pyaasa", "Kaagaz Ke Phool" and "Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam" won him all round acclaim. His famous "beam shot" in the "Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam" sequence from the landmark film "Pyasa" is considered a classic moment in celluloid history. This shot of his was inspired by a light boy who was reflecting a light beam with the help of a mirror. Murthy achieved it by using a pair of ordinary mirrors. This particular shot fetched him the Filmfare Best Cinematographer Award for 1959.

Murthy also assisted Kamaal Amrohi on his masterpiece "Pakeezah" and "Razia Sultana". In the later years of his career, he worked with directors like Pramod Chakraborthy in his hit movies "Ziddi", "Love in Tokyo" and "Naya Zamana". He also worked with Shyam Benegal in his epic serial Bharath Ek Khoj" and "Antarnaad" and with Govind Nihalani in his much lauded movie"Tamas".

V K Murthy will always be revered for the most magnificent works of the black and white era of Indian films.
