Sameer Reddy was born in a middle class family in Hyderabad. He did his schooling from a high school in Rajahmundry. Sameer Reddy's family was in the leather industry. Thus, he decided to go to Chennai to do graduation in Leather Technology. He joined Footware Institute in Guindy at Chennai for a workshop on footwear designing. It is then that he saw Ram Gopal Verma's film Shiva with his cousin. The film influenced him so that he decided to take up the profession of a cinematographer.

Sameer Reddy began his career working as an assistant of S Gopal Reddy. Later on, he also worked in the Graphics Department of Prasad Labs headed by Sai Prasad.

Sameer Reddy worked with Teja as his assistant for films like Antham, Money, Baazee and Rakshana. Teja had earlier worked with Ram Gopal Verma in his popular film Raat.

Sameer Reddy's first film was Bhai which was a Hindi remake of the well known Telugu film 'Anna'. It was a multi-star film in which Sunil Shetty, Sonali Bendre and Pooja Batra acted. He worked in several other Hindi and Telugu films. Sameer Reddy has worked in a few English films like Crocodile 2: Death Swamp. The film was shot in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.
