Binod Pradhan was born in Kalimpong in the state of West Bengal in India. His real name is Binod Kumar Pradhan. He had grown up seeing the grand Kanchenjunga Mountain with all its changing colors and beauty. It is this very sight that had inspired him to become a cinematographer.

His father used to work in a photo studio and presented little Binod a camera with which he used to take snaps of blooming rose buds or the misty foggy mountain of Kanchenjunga.
