The film shows the character of a village lad who stands up against the British injustice and takes it upon himself to teach his fellow villagers how to beat the English team at their own game.

The film was a huge success both at home base as well as abroad. Its popularity grew to such a stage that it was even chosen as India`s choice of movie to be sent for the Oscars. Though the movie did not get the golden statue at the Oscars, it was definitely acclaimed as one of the better movies to have been made in the Indian Bollywood history.

Another movie that has definitely tasted success with its cricket theme was the movie `Iqbal` made by Nagesh Kukonoor. Iqbal told the story of a deaf and mute boy who belonged to a small village but saw dreams of becoming a pace bowler in the Indian cricket team. Though the film did not crash at box office records, it certainly managed to touch the hearts of a number of cricket lovers all over the nation.

Other cricket movies that hit the screen were `Hat Trick`, `Stumped`, `Chain Khuli ke Main Khuli` and `Say Salam India`.
