The Star Screen Awards boasts being the only awards ceremony in India, or more specifically in Bollywood, which has always involved the Executive Director and Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Like most other award ceremonies, the Star Screen Awards ceremony also includes congratulating acting talents in Bollywood by presenting them awards in different categories, in addition to awarding those talents in the film industry who are giving their best behind the silver screen.

Besides facilitating the talents in the Bollywood, the Star Screen Awards also feature many special performances by different actors and actresses during the course of the ceremony. These entertaining performances work as perfect fillers between the various categories of awards. Choreography, mimicry, singing, comic role playing, etc. are some of the performances done on stage for keeping the audiences glued to their seats. The 14th Star Screen Awards took place very recently on January 11, 2008.

Background of Star Screen Awards

Started in the year 1994 by Screen Weekly, the Star Screen Awards was sponsored till 2001 by Videocon International Limited.

The Screen awards are much different as compared to other Bollywood "popularity" award ceremonies. This is so because in this award ceremony the entire nomination of award winners is done by a panel of judges comprising distinguished professional from the Bollywood film industry itself, rather than awarding on the basis of public opinion or audience voting.

The method of selecting an award winner in the Screen awards is similar to that of the Oscars. Moreover, the criteria required for winning an award in this ceremony is not only popular view but also professional excellence.

The specialty of this award ceremony is that it also awards for Hindi/Marathi films and also a special category of awards for TV and Non-film Music. These awards are presented every year at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai. So far, seven editions of these special awards have been presented. There have been three editions of the "Screen Awards for Excellence in South Indian Cinema" in the categories of Tamil/Telegu/Kannada/Malayalam cinema for appreciating the regional films.

Award Categories in Star Screen Awards

The various awards in Star Screen Awards include: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Comedian, and Best Villain. Besides these, the other awards are: Best Music Director, Best Lyricist, Best Female Playback, Best Male Playback, Lifetime Achievement, Most Promising Newcomer - Male, Most Promising Newcomer - Female, Critics Best Actor, Critics Best Actress, Jodi No. 1, and Best Child Artist.

The Technical Awards include: Best Art Direction, Best Action, Best Choreography, Best Editing, Best Cinematographer, Best Background Music, Best Screenplay, Best Story, Best Sound Recording, and Best Dialogue.
