Cinema is one of the most popular medium in India. Common people in this country are deeply interested in films and Bollywood is the main industry which quench their thirst. Relation between Bollywood and Indian cinema is inseparable. Bollywood is the pseudo name of Mumbai City as most of the film companies are situated here. This name, obviously, as it sounds, has been taken from Hollywood film industry in USA. Go through the following to get detailed information about the relation between Bollywood and Indian cinema.

History of Bollywood and Indian Cinema:

The first Indian movie was released from the Bollywood film industry in the year 1913. This film was titled as Raja Harishchandra. Dadasaheb Phalke was the director of this famous film and the movie was totally silent as sound technology was not introduced in Indian film industry by that time. As far as it is known, Alam Ara is the first Indian film to have sound tracks in it. This film was released in 1931 and as far as the theme is concerned, Alam Ara was a musical. The film industry mainly flourished after independence. Many of the great directors worked in the legendary black and white films that were made in the 50s and 60s.

Among the actors who brought these films to success, the mentionable ones are Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Meena Kumari, Madhubala and many others.

With the development in technologies used in making films, Indian films got a new dimension in the later period. Many new actors and actresses came in the limelight after the 80s. One can mention the names of Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda, Nana Patekar, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Madhuri Dixit and many others. During the 90s Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji, and Preity Zinta also came up. Many of spectacular works in the field of film producing was also noticed during this time. Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films are the known names in this context.

Genres of Indian Films:

Most of the films made in Bollywood and Indian cinema as a whole belong to the genre of commercials. Songs and dance sequences play a huge role in all these movies. Many of the Indian directors have expressed that Indian audience is fond of film songs. This is an added entertaining aspect of all these commercial films. Apart from the commercial films, there are some of the parallel films which are also made by this industry, although they are never commercially successful.
