As far as it is known, Alam Ara is the first Indian film to have sound tracks in it. This film was released in 1931 and as far as the theme is concerned, Alam Ara was a musical. The film industry mainly flourished after independence. Many of the great directors worked in the legendary black and white films that were made in the 50s and 60s.

Among the actors who brought these films to success, the mentionable ones are Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Meena Kumari, Madhubala and many others.

With the development in technologies used in making films, Indian films got a new dimension in the later period. Many new actors and actresses came in the limelight after the 80s. One can mention the names of Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda, Nana Patekar, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Madhuri Dixit and many others. Most of the films made in Bollywood and Indian cinema as a whole belong to the genre of commercials. Songs and dance sequences play a huge role in all these movies. Many of the Indian directors have expressed that Indian audience is fond of film songs. This is an added entertaining aspect of all these commercial films.
