The first Indian movie was released from the Bollywood film industry in the year 1913. This film was titled as Raja Harishchandra. As far as it is known, Alam Ara is the first Indian film to have sound tracks in it. This film was released in 1931 and as far as the theme is concerned, Alam Ara was a musical. The film industry mainly flourished after independence. Many of the great directors worked in the legendary black and white films that were made in the 50s and 60s.

With the development in technologies used in making films, Indian films got a new dimension in the later period. Many new actors and actresses came in the limelight after the 80s.
