Bollywood is the famous Mumbai based film industry with Hindi as its main language. Although the term is generally indicative of a specific genre of Indian cinema, it is more often used to denote the entire Indian Film Industry. Moreover, Bollywood is also very popularly known as the Hindi Cinema in India that produces films with a combination of Hindi, Urdu and English dialects. Even though the term Bollywood sounds like a poor mimicry of Hollywood, it has now been introduced in the Oxford English Dictionary because of its widespread acceptance and popularity.
1940- 1960 was regarded as the Golden Age of Hindi Cinema. Pyaasa, Awara and Kagaz Ke Phool were some of the most critically acclaimed Hindi movies to be produced at that time. But the history of Hindi cinema dates back when Dadasaheb Phalke made the first silent film in India. In the later years elements of romance, melodrama and action came into to the picture. During the 1970’s Shyam Benegal was producing films of a different genre and was hence was known as parallel cinema. Nowadays Hindi cinema is made which appeals to all segments of the audience. Although film makers are now aware that audience no longer is happy with the song and dance routine only and they try to find some substance and more meaning when watching a movie.
Bollywood industry and the stunning celebrity stars of the Film Industry are always in the limelight due to various reasons. In the past few years there has been a perceivable influence of the western films on the Hindi cinema and this has consequently led to a massive transformation in the conventional Hindi films. Today, the films released in Bollywood have a more mainstream touch and deals with a range of serious social issues garnering interest as well as support for social causes. Moreover, English dialogues and phrases have a very obvious presence in the Hindi films to the extent that nowadays, you will even come across Indian Films scripted in English.
Bollywood stars
Hindi cinema gained popularity in between 1950-1970. Successful actors of that time are Guru Dutt, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. The popular actresses were Mala Sinha, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Nutan, Madhubala, and Waheeda Rehman. They gave such powerful and mind blowing performances that we remember them for their work till date.
With time in the 70’s Bollywood stars like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and Vinod Khanna came into the scene and captured the hearts of millions. Female stars who were making their mark are Hema Malini, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan, and Zeenat Aman.
During the late 80’s the film fraternity saw a new brigade of stars rising they were the three Khans. Also popular among the masses and carving a niche for themselves were Akshay Kumar and Govinda with their unique acting abilities. In recent times Hrithik Roshan is one of the most popular actors who are giving mind boggling performances in his movies.
The female leads are equally good with Rani, Preity, Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor making their mark as the leading ladies of Bollywood. With popularity soaring of the film industry more and more new acting talents are joining in to name a few will be Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and Imran Khan.
Bollywood clothing
Bollywood affects us in more than one ways. Children try to imitate their favorite star. People tend to adopt every style and way of the big stars. They become our idol, our hero. People even try to adopt the Bollywood clothing style. The clothes worn in the film become a fashion trend and you will often find shop owners telling you that a particular piece of clothing is known as the ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ salwar. So it is seen that Bollywood affects us in a way which dominates our fashion and sense of style also. The Arabian pants worn by Kareena in ‘Jab We Met’ were a big hit in an instant. Chiffon sarees also became a huge hit after films like ‘Chandni’ were released where Sridevi was seen sporting different hues in chiffon.
Bollywood songs
Essential to Hindi film are its songs which are sung by professional playback singers. Some of the very noted playback singers of the yester years are K.L Sehgal, Suraiyya, Geeta Dutt, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh and Shamshad Begum. Different types of songs are sung in the movies. There is a song for every mood and emotion. The Bollywood songs are absolutely soul touching. Other singers include Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan. Nowadays the songs are remixed with beats and rhythms to create new tracks. Some popular songs of the Hindi film industry are : ‘ Mera Joota Hai Japani’, ‘Khaike Paan Bana’, ‘Papa Kehte Hain’, ‘Chaiya Chaiya’, Mitwa, Teri Ore, Guzaarish, Desi Girl, Nagada Nagada, Bheegay Honth Tere, and the list goes on.
Bollywood award shows
The award shows for the film fraternity is a very intense and happy moment. Many people have their hopes pinned up for this big day. One of the biggest Bollywood award shows in the film industry is the Filmfare Awards. The first Filmfare Awards started in the year 1954. Other very important ceremonies and award shows that are held are the Stardust Awards, Star Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, and Zee Cine Awards. These events are highly popular and get great media coverage because of its popularity. These Bollywood award shows are prolific stage shows which feature song and dance programs.
